Lumen Field and T-Mobile Park sit right next to each other in Seattle’s SoDo neighborhood, close enough that fans regularly walk between the two. That’s great news if you’re catching a game and grabbing food at either venue. It’s less great news for traffic, because it means two stadiums’ worth of fans can be converging on the exact same few blocks at the exact same time.
Here’s what actually helps.
Know What’s Playing Where
Lumen Field hosts the Seahawks (NFL), Sounders FC (MLS), and Reign FC (NWSL), which means it’s active across most of the year, not just football season. T-Mobile Park, right next door, is home to the Mariners (MLB) through the baseball season.
Because the two stadiums sit so close together, it’s worth checking whether both venues have something scheduled the same night before you lock in a plan. A Mariners night game overlapping with a Sounders match isn’t rare, and when it happens, the traffic and parking crunch in SoDo is noticeably worse than either event would cause on its own.
The Traffic Reality
Both stadiums sit just south of downtown, close to where I-5 and I-90 converge, which is exactly the kind of interchange that backs up fast once a stadium lets out. A few patterns worth planning around:
Arrive earlier than feels necessary. The last 30 to 45 minutes before kickoff or first pitch is when the surrounding streets get genuinely congested, not gridlocked exactly, but slow enough that a “quick drive” stops being quick.
Leaving is worse than arriving. Traffic on the way in spreads out over a couple of hours. Traffic on the way out happens all at once, when tens of thousands of people try to leave within the same 20 minutes. Budget real time for this, especially if you’re catching a flight or have somewhere to be afterward.
Parking is limited and it fills early. Stadium lots sell out, and the overflow lots tend to be a genuine walk from the gates, not a shortcut. If you’re driving yourself, plan on parking well before you think you need to and walking the rest of the way.
The Light Rail Option
Link Light Rail has a station a short walk from Lumen Field’s main gate, and it’s a legitimate way to skip driving into SoDo entirely, especially for a Seahawks game where the crowd size makes parking the biggest headache of the night. It’s not the right fit for every trip (groups, later games, or anyone coming from outside the light rail’s reach will still need a ride), but it’s worth knowing about as an option, not just a car service pitch.
Why a Lot of Fans Skip Driving Themselves
For anyone not near a light rail stop, the honest case against driving yourself isn’t really about the game, it’s about the 20 minutes after it ends. Circling for parking beforehand and then sitting in exit traffic afterward eats into the night on both ends. A car that drops you at the door and is already waiting when the game lets out skips both problems entirely, and it means nobody in the group has to be the one who stayed sober to drive home.
